The Cape and mask is NON-detachable. The cape is sheer thin which I like because it does not get hot for my son as a wears it almost all the time. The mask has a thin form padding for in my guess to keep mask shape. My son enjoys the cape and mask as he likes Batman.

It's too bad my son loves this item so much because the quality stinks and I would've returned it. I have had to resew both sides of the cape back onto the headpiece. I even cut some of the length of the cape off, thinking it was too heavy but it didn't make a difference. Now the side of the mask next to the eye is getting loose so I have to figure out how to sew that on. Some of the material is also getting "runs" in it like pantyhose does.
I know it's not an expensive item but we got a whole Batman costume at a brick & mortar store during Halloween last year for just a couple of dollars more and that one is still in EXCELLENT condition and it is used just as much as this one.
